Download Aether

built 2026-04-19

This is a demo. Do not rely on it.

Aether is in active development. This build is for experimenting - hearing what the engine sounds like, trying the scripting API, poking at the graph editor. It is not meant to hold your work.

Project files (.aether) and the Rhai scripting API will change between releases with no guarantee of compatibility. Anything you make here may not open in a later version. Audio hardware behaviour, MIDI, and scripting surface are all subject to change without notice.

Bugs and ideas welcome at hello@voidrealm.com.

System requirements

Developed on M1 Max, Tahoe 26.2. Older macOS may work but is untested.

Installing

  1. Open the downloaded Aether-0.1.0-demo.dmg.
  2. Drag Aether into the Applications folder.

Because Aether isn't signed through Apple's Developer Program, macOS Gatekeeper blocks it on first launch. The warning looks alarming but just means Apple hasn't verified who built this. You can get past it either of two ways:

Option A: one Terminal command (fastest)

Paste this into Terminal (Applications → Utilities → Terminal):

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Aether.app

This strips the macOS “downloaded from the internet” flag so Gatekeeper doesn't re-check. Done once, never needed again.

Option B: System Settings (no Terminal)

  1. Double-click Aether. A dialog appears saying the developer can't be verified. Click Done.
  2. Open System SettingsPrivacy & Security.
  3. Scroll to the Security section. You'll see “Aether” was blocked to protect your Mac with an Open Anyway button. Click it and authenticate.
  4. Double-click Aether again. A confirm dialog offers Open. Click it. Only needed the first time.
